Points Race

Track cycling's points race as an arcade game. Eight riders on a 250 m velodrome, a sprint for points every three laps and double points at the finish. Sit in and fight for the sprints, or go off the front alone and try to lap the field for twenty points. Most points wins.

Controls

↑
Up the track: climb the banking, or go round the outside of the bunch. Costs speed
↓
Down the track: dive off the banking. Gives the speed back
→
More effort: each tap adds 5%; hold to keep adding. Past your riding-hard pace, energy drains fast
←
Less effort: each tap takes 5% off; hold to keep going. Ease off to recover; at 0% you soft-pedal and brake. Also sits up out of a sprint

Jump into the full sprint. Press again to sit up and save energy

How a points race works

  • Lap 1 is neutral. A rolling start at a capped pace, and nobody may jump. If the bunch is strung out at the end of it, there's another rollout lap.
  • A sprint every three laps. The first four over the line score 5, 3, 2 and 1. The last sprint, at the finish, is worth double: 10, 6, 4 and 2.
  • Lap the field for 20 points. Go off the front and catch the back of the bunch from behind. Get dropped and caught by the bunch, and you lose 20.
  • Most points wins. A tie goes to whoever was further up in the final sprint. The scoreboard in the infield keeps count.
  • The draft is free speed, and you'll need it: there are four sprints to recover for.
  • You never get it all back. Ease off and energy recovers (soft-pedal for faster), but only to 20 points above the lowest it has been; the energy bar greys out the rest. Full gas recovers nothing.
  • You can't see right behind you. Riders on your wheel are a blur. Look back for the gap and how much the rider behind has left.

Points

  • Pick a rider: a Diesel (stamina, made for taking laps), a Kilo rider (a bit of both) or a Sprinter (top speed, made for the sprints).
  • All seven rivals from Match Sprint Standoff, each with their own plan: some sprint, some attack, some chase.
  • Your score is 100 for every race point, laps included, plus a bonus for your final place.

All riders are fictional. Any resemblance to someone at your local track is your problem.
